Innovative Pedagogical Strategies for Strengthening Meaningful Learning in Contemporary Educational Contexts

Abstract

This study examines the role of innovative pedagogical strategies in strengthening meaningful learning among lower secondary students in the canton of Salinas, Santa Elena province, based on open data from the Ecuadorian Ministry of Education and recent empirical evidence. An applied mixed-methods, non-experimental design is used, integrating descriptive analysis of district and national statistics with a systematic review of specialized literature on innovative teaching strategies in Ecuadorian basic education and local experiences in natural sciences. The results show that district 24D02 La Libertad–Salinas serves a large and diverse student population in basic education, with intermediate achievement levels in external assessments, which underscores the need to transform classroom practices. The synthesis of empirical studies indicates that methodologies such as project-based learning, flipped classroom, gamification, pedagogical use of digital technologies, concrete materials, and formative assessment produce significant improvements in achievement, motivation, participation, and deep meaning-making. In the peninsular context, investigative essays and didactic proposals in sixth-grade natural sciences confirm that innovative strategies, contextualized to the coastal environment, enhance the connection between curricular content and students’ everyday lives, fostering more durable and relevant learning. It is concluded that consolidating pedagogical innovation programs in lower secondary education, supported by teacher professional development, institutional leadership, and the systematic use of open educational data, is a strategic pathway to improve the quality and equity of learning in Salinas and similar educational contexts.
